1223 Peoples Avenue Troy, New York
Founded in 1980, the Rensselaer Incubator Program is one of the oldest incubators in the nation and the first to be wholly sponsored and operated by a university. Since its inception, the Incubator Program's mission has been "giving life to new ideas." It is rooted in the firm belief that ideas both come from the university and are drawn to it. It is the Incubator's goal to augment the university's special role of providing a fertile environment for the growth and development of new ideas, and additionally to create opportunities for the application and further evolution of those ideas into the greater community through the channels of commercial activity. This greater mission encompasses three core objectives:
- Enrichment of the academic environment
- Technology transfer and commercialization
- Regional economic development

Incubator for Nanotechnology Ventures, Emerging Sciences and Technologies Troy, New York
In 2006, Russell Sage College of Troy and Evident Technologies of Troy (a pioneer in the development of quantum dots, which are semiconductor nanomaterials that have applications in the life sciences, solid state lighting, energy, security, telecommunications and more), created INVEST, and Evident Technologies became its first tenant. The incubator provides space and resources to help high-tech companies grow and expand, while advancing Sage's programs in science, technology and business. The incubator is the first of its kind nationally to be located at a women's college.
The incubator also builds on Sage's GEMS program (Girls in Engineering, Math and Science) for middle and high school girls. The program's mission is to increase the number of girls and women studying and entering technical careers in engineering, mathematics and computer science.
INVEST helps fill the growing need for incubator space in the Capital Region, which has proven to be successful in promoting cross cultivation of ideas and technologies from businesses to academia, and is home to a growing number of nanotechnology ventures.

East Campus Rensselaer, New York
The University at Albany's East Campus is home to two university centers: The Center for Functional Genomics (CFG) and the Gen*NY*Sis Cancer Research Center. Other tenants include the Albany College of Pharmacy's Pharmaceutical Research Institute and the New York Neural Stem Cell Center. These facilities are located at the East Campus because of the support and access to high-end instrumentation that the CFG offers them.
The CFG works with companies and researchers from academia and government around the world. All Ivy League schools have outsourced work to the CFG and the Cancer Research Center, as have major research institutions such as Scripps and the National Institutes of Health. In addition, the centers do work for large pharma and biotech companies, several of which have come to Rensselaer County to be close to the facility.
Researchers at the East Campus are currently working on a number of commissioned projects, including genetic engineering of an exotic fruit to remove its prickers, various cancer research projects, and a $2.2 million grant awarded to a faculty member studying a new layer of cellular signaling managed by the cell's RNA. About 20 percent of the work done at the centers is global; 50 percent is local and the other 30 percent comes from throughout the rest of the United States.
The Capital Region has the fourth largest concentration of employment in research, testing, and medical laboratories of all metropolitan areas in the U.S., largely due to the high concentration of higher education facilities and the fact that the New York Department of Health's Wadsworth Lab is the third largest bioresearch organization in the country.
